Michael Appleton, the manager of Charlton Athletic, has stated that they will keep an eye on the goalie free agent market.
Following Harry Iste’s injury, Charlton Athletic might require backup in goal. Last night, the Addicks defeated Exeter City 4-1 at home in League One.
Ashley Maynard-Brewer was put in goal to start the game versus the Grecians. On the bench was young Henry Molyneux.
According to Appleton, free transfers are the only way we will be able to add someone without perhaps endangering Ash (Maynard-Brewer), god forbid. There are still two or three options available that might work.
Here are three options the London club could take into consideration in light of that.
Steer, Jed
The former Charlton loanee, who is still available, severed connections with Aston Villa at the end of the last campaign. The 31-year-old, who previously in his career played for England’s youth team, spent ten years at Villa Park.
Throughout his ten years with the Premier League team, Steer went on to make 36 appearances across all competitions. Along with the Addicks, he also spent time on loan at Doncaster Rovers, Huddersfield Town, and Luton Town.
Macey, Matt
While weighing his goalkeeping alternatives, Appleton should consider him as a viable possibility. The ex-Arsenal player quit premier league newcomers Luton at the beginning of September.
Since then, Macey has been deliberating his options as he attempts to return to the game. In the third tier past season, he appeared in 21 games while on loan at Portsmouth.
Frank Lewis
The 35-year-old stopper has made 538 appearances to date and is a highly skilled player. Following the expiration of his contract with Aberdeen in late June, he is now a free agent.
After working for Cardiff City, Norwich City, and Peterborough United, Lewis relocated to Scotland in 2016. Charlton could keep an eye on the man, who was born in Suffolk, as they consider their options.
