The Green Bay Packers are in dire need of a third starting linebacker as they transition to a 4-3 base defense, having only two starters currently in place following the departure of De’Vondre Campbell. The search for the missing piece has led them to consider veteran Denzel Perryman, who has shown promise as a potential addition.
Perryman, a 2021 Pro Bowler, is being eyed by both the Packers and the Los Angeles Chargers as a potential solution to their linebacker conundrum. Originally a second-round pick by the San Diego Chargers in 2015, the 31-year-old showcased his abilities during his 12-game stint with the Houston Texans last season, where he recorded 76 tackles, including six for losses, along with three passes defensed.
Notably, Perryman’s most impressive seasons in terms of tackles occurred over the past three years. In 2021, while playing for the Las Vegas Raiders, he achieved a career-high of 154 tackles, earning him Pro Bowl honors. His tenure with the Raiders in 2022 saw him register 83 tackles and a career-best 14 tackles for losses. Perryman’s performance could have potentially reached the 100-tackle mark last season if not for missing five games due to injury.
With only four linebackers currently under contract, including presumptive starters Quay Walker and Isaiah McDuffie, as well as special-teams standout Kristian Welch and practice-squad player Christian Young, the Packers are left with a clear need for both a third starter and depth. Consequently, they are expected to explore options in free agency and the upcoming draft to address this crucial position on their roster.
