According to reports from City Press, SA Rugby is aiming to recoup R85 million, with the Bulls and Sharks expected to contribute approximately R15 million each. Additionally, hosting Tests in Cape Town and Johannesburg will cost the respective unions R20 million each.
The financial breakdown continues with R15 million expected from the remaining two Tests, where the Pumas are anticipated to pay R10 million for the Argentina clash, and the Cheetahs are expected to pay R5 million for the historic Test against Portugal.
The significant expenses associated with hosting these Tests have raised concerns about their financial viability among some administrators. They argue that due to the high hosting fees, it’s challenging to turn a profit unless there’s strong support from the local municipality.
Administrators hope that municipalities recognize the economic benefits brought by hosting Tests and contribute financially to the guarantee amount required by unions to make hosting profitable. However, not all franchises have established such relationships with their municipalities, posing challenges for their financial sustainability.
In terms of the 2024 season, significant changes are underway for the Springboks. Rassie Erasmus, the mastermind behind their success, has returned as head coach following Jacques Nienaber’s departure to Leinster. Joining the coaching staff is Irishman Jerry Flannery, who will oversee defensive duties, while Tony Brown, a former All Black, will lead the Springboks’ attack, filling the void left by Felix Jones.
The upcoming season marks the beginning of the Rugby World Cup cycle for the world champions, with fixtures against Wales, Ireland, and Portugal in the mid-year Tests, followed by the Rugby Championship and concluding with the end-of-year tour.
