One of Jeff Hafley’s top assistant coaches in Chestnut Hill is joining his old boss in Green Bay.

The majority of the Green Bay Packers’ defensive coaching unit is set, but head coach Matt LaFleur and defensive coordinator Jeff Hafley are still making some additional hires. According to NFL reporter Aaron Wilson’s report on Monday, the Packers are bringing Sean Duggan on board for a defensive assistant position, bringing one of Hafley’s recent standout assistants from Boston College to Green Bay.
Duggan has been part of Hafley’s coaching staff for the past five years, notably as the linebackers coach at Boston College for the last four seasons, with an added co-defensive coordinator role in 2023. His journey with Hafley began at Ohio State University in 2019, where he served as a graduate assistant coach.
Transitioning from Ohio to Boston College in 2020 wasn’t entirely new for Duggan, as he originally hails from the Cincinnati area and previously played linebacker for the Eagles from 2011 to 2014. During his playing career, he participated in 45 games, starting seven, and held the position of team captain during his senior year.
With his extensive background both as a player and a coach, Duggan is expected to excel in coaching linebackers, likely taking on an assistant role under the new Packers linebackers coach, Anthony Campanile. This move could lead to a reunion with Isaiah McDuffie, who achieved over 100 tackles for the Eagles in 2020.
Although the Packers have yet to formally announce their complete coaching staff, it’s anticipated they will do so once all positions are finalized. Presently, the team’s official website lists only four defensive coaches: Hafley, whose hiring has been officially confirmed, along with three returning coaches from the previous season: defensive backs coach Ryan Downard, defensive line coach/pass rush specialist Jason Rebrovich, and defensive quality control coach Wendel Davis.
