Ross McCormack has argued that it is still too early to consider Jamie Shackleton replacing Luke Ayling in the starting lineup for Leeds United.
For Leeds in their 3-0 victory over Watford at Elland Road on Saturday, Shackleton began as right defender.
Before being replaced by Ayling in the second half, the versatile player, who has played in a variety of places this season, was brilliant once more.
For a number of years, Ayling has been Leeds’ go-to right-back, and McCormack emphasized that it is important to remember that he has been a reliable performer for the Whites.
Although the former Leeds captain acknowledged that Shackleton had a strong performance against Watford, he does not think it is time to even consider switching the more seasoned right-back out of the starting lineup.
“It’s vital not to get swept up in the fact that it’s just one game.
“Luke Ayling has been carrying out this activity for a while.
“I noticed a statistic that stated he had participated in 480 league games over the course of 12 to 14 years.
He is really trustworthy.
Although Shackleton was excellent today, he still has a long way to go before Luke Ayling’s status in the team is threatened, according to the coach. “He will be happy for Shackleton to go on and produce that performance, but he has a long way to go,” the coach said.
In Liam Cooper’s absence, Ayling has served as captain and has started seven of Leeds’ eight Championship contests.
