Michael Beale, the manager of Rangers, was extremely critical of his team’s performance in the 1-0 victory over Motherwell and claimed that he had “harsh” words with them in the locker room following the game.
Cyriel Dessers’ goal in the 24th minute gave them a slender victory over the Steelmen at Ibrox and propelled them to third place in the Premiership, but the boos from some of the fans inside the stadium that followed the full-time whistle told their own story. Rangers performed far below the standards expected of them and were left clinging on at the end as the visitors pushed for an equalizer. Beale gave an honest evaluation of the performance, calling sections of the play “unacceptable” with evident displeasure and rage.
Beale stated, “I was not happy with the team today from the first minute on.” “The players playing here should not have made the unforced errors with the ball. That performance from today was dreadful.
“It was a good goal, but aside from that, some of our play against a team that was in a good situation, is well-organized, and came here with a strategy, was so terrible. We frequently turned the ball over and exposed ourselves to their strategy, which they carried out more successfully than we did.
“This bunch of players knows that I want more from them. I don’t find any solace in today’s football game victory. That doesn’t give me even the slightest solace; I didn’t like the game at all. The players probably did not like it either. After taking a step forward on Thursday [after defeating Real Betis 1-0], this is a full backwards step.
After the game, when asked if he was upset with the players, Beale replied, “We’ve had harsh words, yes.”
Additional injuries to his team did not improve Beale’s disposition. Rabbi Matondo was substituted for the first time, and the manager acknowledged that “it doesn’t look like a good one” while Tom Lawrence was away and won’t be available until mid-October.
When pressed for more information regarding the health of both players, Beale added: “Tom thought he had cramp and wanted to play [against Betis], but we didn’t take a chance. He went for a scan after waking up the following morning unable to walk. He won’t participate in this aspect of the global duty. With a calf, he has a difficulty. Even if there will be a two-week respite, the foreign duty seems to last longer. He will return with Todd Cantwell, Nico Raskin, and Danilo. Although Kieran [Dowell] might return in the middle of the week to play on the weekend, it is clear that he has to work on his fitness.
“Rabbi, we believe that might be a terrible one today. The outside of his knee has been struck. I was informed of this information. We need [Abdallah] Sima and [Kemar] Roofe for Wednesday [against Livingston in the Viaplay Cup quarterfinal] because they had niggles into today’s game. Since we weren’t very good, the truth is that we had to make do with what we had on the field in order to get a result today. That is where I’ll leave it.
