Instead of bringing back Aaron Ramsdale for Sunday’s crucial match against local rivals Tottenham, Gunners boss Mikel Arteta has chosen to keep David Raya in goal.
David Raya will start in goal for Arsenal on Sunday against Tottenham, per manager Mikel Arteta.
After last weekend’s 1-0 victory against Everton and the midweek thumping of PSV Eindhoven in the Champions League, the Gunners manager decided to start the on-loan goalie instead of last season’s No. 1 Aaron Ramsdale for the third straight game.
After signing Ramsdale and letting Bernd Leno leave in a same way two years ago, Arteta isn’t afraid to make tough decisions. While Ramsdale started the season’s first four Premier League games, Raya now appears to be the team’s new No. 1.
This week, it was revealed by Mirror Sport that the 28-year-old international from Spain had been brought in to replace Ramsdale. However, it is moving along far more quickly than was anticipated.
In recent weeks, Arteta has been confronted with a number of inquiries on the circumstance. When asked about Ramsdale’s reaction to losing his spot, Arteta said last Friday in response to questions from the media: “I understand [his unhappiness], and it’s really difficult for every player.
“He’s been really helpful and kind around here, and that’s what I want from every single player because it goes both ways because while you’re on the field, there are other people who aren’t. He has been excellent thus far.
It is challenging, and other players find it to be such. We all agree that Aaron is a remarkable person who exudes charisma and vibe. We must deal with that, but first I must put together a lineup for the game.
When specifically questioned about who would start the match against the Spurs, Arteta responded, “No, I haven’t decided who will start.”
Although Ramsdale has not yet made a public statement regarding the situation, Raya recently spoke about it and is obviously enjoying the rivalry for playing time with the England international. Additionally, he made it plain that his colleague goalie will have to compete for the job.
Raya said, “Every player has to believe in themselves to make the team, and that is why I moved to Arsenal and try to do my best for the club when I’m selected.
“I’ve only been selected for the final two games; that is just the gaffer’s option; it is his choice, not mine. When Aaron comes in, he’ll need to battle for the team and help them win games as well.
“I believe this is the first time two elite goalkeepers have played for the same team, therefore it is now standard practice in football. We are forced to work with the gaffer’s request for two elite players at each position. I participated in the most recent two contests; now we await Sunday.
