When a player spends their entire career with one team, the thought of switching to another team may seem improbable. Nevertheless, it’s a common occurrence across sports, and this offseason, the Philadelphia Eagles could see one of their most iconic players depart via free agency.
Fletcher Cox, a standout defensive tackle for the Eagles, is reportedly considering leaving the team after spending 12 years with them since being drafted 12th overall in the 2012 NFL Draft. With just one year remaining on his contract and a manageable cap hit of $5.7 million, Cox’s future with the Eagles is uncertain.
The Eagles have recently focused on bolstering their defensive line through the draft, potentially reducing the need for Cox to play a prominent role in the team’s plans. Despite being 33 years old, Cox is believed to have a few productive seasons ahead of him, albeit possibly not in Philadelphia.
During a recent appearance on the podcast hosted by Pittsburgh Steelers defensive tackle and recent NFL Man of the Year award recipient Cam Heyward, Cox expressed his desire to join the Steelers and play alongside Heyward.
Cox didn’t hesitate to express his admiration for Heyward and his interest in teaming up with him: “It’s all love. Just respect that you got for the game, respect that I have for the game. The way that you play the game, the way that I play the game, like we definitely could. That would’ve been nice. We could make some things happen.”
If the Eagles decide to trade Cox, the Steelers could emerge as potential suitors. Cox’s reasonable contract and impressive resume, which includes 70 sacks and six Pro Bowl selections, make him an attractive option for teams in need of defensive line help.
