Giants Could Poach Eagles’ 24-Year-Old Pro Bowl Talent
Speculation is rife that the New York Giants might target one of the Philadelphia Eagles’ rising stars. Brad Spielberger from Pro Football Focus suggests that the Giants could be eyeing Eagles’ Pro Bowl running back D’Andre Swift as a potential replacement for Saquon Barkley, who is set to enter free agency. Swift’s demonstrated improvement in 2023, his adeptness at hitting designated holes, and his prowess in pass-catching make him an attractive option for the Giants.
Despite Swift’s stellar performance in Philadelphia, there are concerns that the Eagles, notorious for their cautious spending on running backs, might allow him to walk in free agency, akin to their handling of Miles Sanders after his Pro Bowl season in 2022. Sanders’ subsequent underwhelming performance with the Carolina Panthers after signing a lucrative deal underscores the Eagles’ conservative approach to running back contracts.
Swift’s market value is estimated at $6.7 million per season for four years, while Barkley’s projected value stands at $9.9 million annually for three years. With Swift’s stats comparable to Barkley’s, and considering the Giants’ middling salary cap space, a move for Swift could hinge on Barkley’s decision to pursue opportunities with playoff contenders rather than engage in a potential rebuild with the Giants.
Meanwhile, Deebo Samuel of the San Francisco 49ers dismissed notions of a rivalry between the Eagles and the Niners, citing their lopsided win in December. This win marked a turning point for the Eagles, who had a promising start to the season but faltered afterward. While a rematch between the two teams isn’t slated for the 2024 regular season, the possibility of a playoff encounter remains.”
