Coming off a resurgent stretch with the Atlanta Braves, 40-year-old right-hander Jesse Chavez went on MLB Network Radio and said he plans to retire after this season.

After 16 years in the big leagues, right-handed pitcher Jesse Chavez is on the verge of retirement.

Chavez recently went on MLB Network Radio’s “Loud Outs” and said he plans to call it quits after the 2024 season. The 40-year-old reliever is currently a free agent, but he is still only a few months removed from a highly productive season with the Atlanta Braves.

“I think this is probably gonna be it,” Chavez said. “We all talked about me going out the way I came in – being able to roll out of bed and pick up a baseball and throw it. And that’s how I feel, still. So I feel like that’s kind of unique, in a way, where we don’t get that option too many times where we can go home healthy.

The Texas Rangers selected Chavez in the 42nd round of the 2002 MLB Draft, then traded him to the Pittsburgh Pirates in 2006. Chavez made his major league debut in 2008, but he was dealt to the Tampa Bay Rays after the 2009 season.

The Rays flipped Chavez to the Braves later that same offseason in order to acquire All-Star closer Rafael Soriano. From there, Chavez bounced around from the Braves to the Kansas City Royals to the Toronto Blue Jays before getting purchased by the Oakland Athletics in 2012.
