The Atlanta Braves have signed former major league pitcher Taylor Widener to a minor-league deal, sources tell Braves Today. Terms of the deal were not immediately available.

Widener, a 12th-round selection of the New York Yankees in 2016 out of the University of South Carolina, will begin the season in AAA Gwinnett.

Only 29, Widener debuted in 2020 with the Arizona Diamondbacks and appeared in 49 games for them (including 13 starts) across three seasons. Going 2-3 with a 4.26 ERA, Widener suffered from walk and homer issues, putting up a 4.5 BB/9 and a 1.8 HR/9 over that span.

The Braves have been quite active this offseason, but it hasn’t been of the blockbuster variety.

The most notable acquisitions have been the Jarred Kelenic trade and the free agent signings of Reynaldo Lopez, Joe Jimenz, and Pierce Johnson. There’s been a handful of other minor moves, and Alex Anthopoulos just made another one.

The 20-year-old was originally drafted by the Yankees but was traded to the Diamondbacks in a three-team deal involving Brandon Drury among others. From 2020 to 2022 for Arizona, Widener tossed 107.2 innings of 4.26 ERA ball while punching out 22.4% of batters faced. However,  his 11% free pass rate isn’t as encouraging.
