When Barcelona was looking for a new midfielder, Sergi Darder was one of the unexpected names that kept coming up.
Darder, a central midfielder by trade, was thought of as a potential choice to bolster the middle of the field, particularly in light of Sergio Busquets’ departure.
Darder, however, decided not to sign with Barcelona, who ultimately chose to sign Oriol Romeu from Girona.
Darder discloses Barcelona’s selection
Sergi Darder gave an explanation for why he decided against accepting a summer transfer to Barcelona in a media interview.
“When Barcelona calls you on the first day, you respond: “Are you going to Barcelona? Is this thing on? According to Darder, who was mentioned by MonEsport, “and then you think it’s this thing that might change your life a little bit.”
The midfielder was referring to how a move to Camp Nou may have given a career that had primarily spent at Espanyol a lot more influence.
Darder clarified that his connections to Espanyol were crucial in getting him to decide against moving to Barça.
“However, when you give it a cold-eyed thought, you respond, ‘No, I prefer many other things than going.
“In the end, I was Espanyol’s captain. Although leaving the club was extremely painful, I did it and traveled to Mallorca. Imagine if I went to Barcelona on the other side; that would not be in line with my morals,” he continued.
Close links between Darder and Espanyol
Although he started his professional career at Malaga, Sergi Darder began his youth career with Espanyol and the midfielder has strong ties to the team.
In 2018, Darder began his second stint at Espanyol after paying the club €8 million to get him on board. He rose to prominence in the Catalan club’s midfield, eventually taking on the role of captain.
However, the midfielder decided to leave this past summer and join RCD Mallorca once more for a new opportunity.
