Former Seattle Mariners’ stud reliever Penn Murfee has signed with the Atlanta Braves, continuing a whirlwind offseason for the righty.

Per Jeff Passan of ESPN:

Right-handed reliever Penn Murfee and the Atlanta Braves are in agreement on a major league deal, sources tell ESPN. It’s been quite a two weeks for Murfee. Braves claimed him off waivers Nov. 14, then non-tendered him three days later. He rejoins one of the game’s best bullpens.

Murfee was let go by the Mariners at the end of the season, then was claimed by the New York Mets. He was let go by New York, then picked by Atlanta and let go again, as Passan indicates. In Atlanta, he will join one of the game’s best bullpens, but the question is when. He underwent season-ending elbow surgery in June and was thought to be out until at least June of 2024.

When healthy though, Murfee has been highly effective. He finished with a 1.29 ERA this past season, albeit in just 16 appearances. He was 4-0 in 2022 with a 2.99 ERA in 64 games. He helped the Mariners end their lengthy playoff drought and advance to the postseason for the first time since 2001.

He was an integral part of the group that upset the Toronto Blue Jays in the American League wild card round. He features a nice two-seam fastball and slider combination and can be a tough matchup for right-handed hitters.

The Braves won the National League East but were bounced in the NLDS by the Philadelphia Phillies.
