The Boston Red Sox have solidified their pitching roster by signing left-handed pitcher Garrett Crochet to a six-year contract extension valued at $170 million. This agreement, which commences in the 2026 season, includes a player opt-out clause following the 2030 season. Notably, this contract represents the largest financial commitment ever made to a pitcher with over four years of MLB service time, surpassing the previous record set by Jacob deGrom’s 2019 contract with the New York Mets.
Crochet’s journey to this landmark deal began with the Chicago White Sox, who selected him 11th overall in the 2020 MLB Draft. Demonstrating exceptional talent, he bypassed the minor leagues and debuted in the majors the same year. Over four seasons with Chicago, Crochet amassed a 3.29 ERA and a 1.155 WHIP across 104 appearances. His 2024 season was particularly impressive, earning him his first All-Star selection as he recorded a 3.58 ERA and a career-high 209 strikeouts in 32 starts.
The structure of Crochet’s extension reflects both the team’s commitment and strategic planning. The contract includes up to $2 million per year in escalators between 2027 and 2031, based on his finish in Cy Young Award voting. Additionally, while the deal lacks a no-trade clause, Crochet is entitled to a $2 million assignment bonus if traded during its duration.
