The Toronto Blue Jays have solidified their commitment to catcher Alejandro Kirk by finalizing a five-year, $58 million contract extension, ensuring his presence on the team through the 2030 season. This agreement includes a $6 million signing bonus and does not feature any deferred payments or club options.
Kirk, 26, had previously agreed to a $4.6 million salary for the upcoming season. This extension encompasses his final arbitration year in 2026 and secures four additional seasons, effectively postponing his free agency eligibility until after his age-31 season.
Since his MLB debut with the Blue Jays in 2020, Kirk has demonstrated consistent performance. Over 434 career games, he has maintained a .264 batting average, with 36 home runs and 187 RBIs. Notably, his 2022 season earned him an All-Star selection and a Silver Slugger Award, as he posted a .285 average with 14 home runs and 63 RBIs.
In the 2024 season, Kirk continued to be a reliable presence behind the plate, recording a .253 batting average, five home runs, and 54 RBIs over 103 games.
Blue Jays president and CEO Mark Shapiro has praised Kirk’s exceptional mental attributes and game management skills, highlighting his ability to remain composed in high-pressure situations.
This extension reflects the Blue Jays’ strategy to retain key players, especially as several core members approach free agency in the coming years. By securing Kirk, the organization aims to maintain stability and competitiveness within its roster.
As the Blue Jays prepare for the upcoming season, Kirk’s continued presence is anticipated to be a significant asset to the team’s success.
