The Philadelphia Phillies have made a strategic roster decision by optioning catcher Garrett Stubbs to Triple-A Lehigh Valley, thereby designating Rafael Marchán as the primary backup to starting catcher J.T. Realmuto for the upcoming season.
This move was largely influenced by the players’ minor league option statuses. Stubbs had one remaining option, allowing the Phillies to send him to the minors without exposing him to waivers. In contrast, Marchán lacked remaining options, meaning he would have had to clear waivers before a demotion, posing a risk of losing him to another team.
Stubbs, who has served as the Phillies’ backup catcher for the past three seasons, appeared in 141 games during that span. While his defensive contributions have been commendable, his offensive performance has been less impactful. Off the field, Stubbs has been a valuable asset, often assisting in scouting and developing game strategies for the pitching staff.
Marchán, at 25, now has the opportunity to establish himself as a reliable major league backup catcher. Despite a history of injuries, when healthy, he has demonstrated solid defensive skills. Notably, in a limited sample of 121 major league plate appearances, Marchán has posted a strong .811 OPS, surpassing his minor league OPS of .676.
Stubbs acknowledged the challenging nature of the situation, understanding that the business side of baseball can be difficult. He expressed his determination to continue performing at his best, despite the circumstances.
The Phillies’ decision underscores the importance of maintaining organizational depth, especially at the catcher position. By retaining both Stubbs and Marchán, they ensure coverage in case of injuries or other unforeseen events during the season. This approach reflects a strategic balance between immediate team needs and long-term player development within the organization.
