In light of recent injuries to key starting pitchers, the New York Mets have bolstered their pitching staff by signing veteran right-hander José Ureña to a minor league contract. This move aims to address the absences of Frankie Montas and Sean Manaea, both sidelined with injuries.
José Ureña, 33, brings a wealth of experience to the Mets, having spent a decade in Major League Baseball. Last season with the Texas Rangers, Ureña appeared in 33 games, starting nine, and posted a 5-8 record with a 3.80 ERA. He recorded 70 strikeouts against 39 walks over 109 innings, demonstrating his capability as both a starter and reliever.
The terms of Ureña’s contract include a $2 million salary if he
a spot on the major league roster, with potential performance bonuses up to $750,000. This structure provides the Mets with financial flexibility while offering Ureña incentives based on his contributions at the big-league level.
The Mets’ rotation has been impacted by injuries to Montas and Manaea. Montas is expected to be sidelined until at least mid-May due to a high-grade lat strain, while Manaea is recovering from an oblique strain, with a projected return before the end of April.
