Vladimir Guerrero Jr., the Toronto Blue Jays’ star first baseman, is approaching free agency, prompting widespread speculation about his potential destinations. Among the 30 Major League Baseball (MLB) teams, the Baltimore Orioles have been identified as a possible, albeit unlikely, suitor for Guerrero’s services. Analysts suggest that such a move would be a “monster upset,” considering the Orioles’ historical financial strategies and current roster composition.
The Orioles have traditionally operated with a conservative approach to free-agent signings, often avoiding high-priced contracts. Their largest free-agent commitment remains a seven-year, $161 million deal with Chris Davis in 2016, a contract that has since been viewed unfavorably due to Davis’s subsequent performance decline. This experience may have reinforced the organization’s cautious stance on substantial financial commitments.
Guerrero, at 26, is expected to seek a contract exceeding $400 million, reflecting his elite status in the league. Such a financial commitment would represent a significant departure from the Orioles’ typical spending patterns. Additionally, with prospects like Heston Kjerstad and Colton Cowser poised to join the major league roster, the Orioles may prioritize integrating these young players over pursuing high-cost free agents.
While the Orioles’ recent success and emerging talent base suggest a promising future, their historical financial conservatism and focus on internal development make the acquisition of a marquee free agent like Guerrero improbable. Therefore, while not entirely impossible, the prospect of Guerrero donning an Orioles uniform would indeed constitute a “monster upset” in the MLB landscape.
