After Pete Alonso declined the New York Mets’ three-year, $68-$70 million offer, the Mets have shifted their focus elsewhere, re-signing outfielder Jesse Winker and bolstering their bullpen with reliever A.J. Minter. This pivot indicates the Mets are preparing for a future without Alonso, who remains a free agent.
In response, the Toronto Blue Jays have emerged as a potential suitor for Alonso. Despite recently signing outfielder Anthony Santander to a five-year, $92.5 million deal, the Blue Jays are reportedly still interested in Alonso to further enhance their lineup’s power. If acquired, Alonso could share first base and designated hitter duties with Vladimir Guerrero Jr., who has also played at third base.
The Blue Jays’ pursuit of Alonso may also serve as a contingency plan, given Guerrero Jr.’s pending free agency after the 2025 season. Securing Alonso could provide the team with a long-term solution at first base, ensuring sustained offensive strength. As discussions progress, the Blue Jays appear committed to making significant roster enhancements to remain competitive in the upcoming seasons.
