In a significant roster move, the Toronto Blue Jays have signed veteran right-handed pitcher Max Scherzer to a one-year contract worth $15.5 million. Scherzer, 40, is an eight-time All-Star, three-time Cy Young Award winner, and two-time World Series champion. In the previous season with the Texas Rangers, he made nine starts, posting a 3.95 ERA, a 5.6% walk rate, and a 22.6% strikeout rate. Over his illustrious 17-year MLB career, Scherzer has accumulated 216 wins and 3,416 strikeouts, ranking him 11th in MLB history for strikeouts.
To make room for Scherzer on the 40-man roster, the Blue Jays have designated right-handed pitcher Michael Petersen for assignment. Petersen, 30, was claimed off waivers from the Miami Marlins on November 4, 2024. During the 2024 season, he made his Major League debut, appearing in 16 games split between the Los Angeles Dodgers and the Miami Marlins, recording a 5.95 ERA over 19.2 innings with 14 strikeouts.
Petersen’s designation for assignment allows the Blue Jays to clear a roster spot for Scherzer. The team now has seven days to trade, release, or outright Petersen to the minors if he clears waivers. This move underscores the Blue Jays’ commitment to strengthening their pitching staff as they prepare for the upcoming season.
