Recent reports indicate that the New York Mets and Pete Alonso are engaged in challenging contract negotiations. Owner Steve Cohen has described the discussions as “exhausting,” expressing dissatisfaction with the proposals from Alonso’s agent, Scott Boras. The Mets reportedly offered a three-year deal worth $68-$70 million, which Alonso’s camp rejected. Cohen has acknowledged the possibility of moving forward without Alonso if an agreement isn’t reached.
Insider Ken Rosenthal has suggested that the Mets may not be fully committed to re-signing Alonso, pointing to the relatively short-term offer as evidence. Rosenthal believes that if the Mets were eager to retain Alonso, they would have presented a more persuasive offer.
Given the current state of negotiations and the Mets’ firm stance on contract terms, the timeline for a resolution remains uncertain. Both parties appear prepared to wait for a more favorable outcome, which could prolong discussions and delay any final decision regarding Alonso’s future with the team.
