Red Sox News: Former catcher retires, Anthony Santander, Alex Bregman and more…….

Former Boston Red Sox catcher Kevin Plawecki announced his retirement from professional baseball on January 19, 2025. Plawecki, who played for the Red Sox from 2020 to 2022, shared his decision via Instagram, expressing gratitude for his eight-year MLB career. He now plans to transition into coaching, bringing his on-field experience to a new role within the sport.

In free agency news, the Toronto Blue Jays have signed outfielder Anthony Santander to a five-year, $90 million contract. Santander, known for his power-hitting abilities, was previously linked to the Red Sox, who are seeking to bolster their lineup with a right-handed bat. This signing by a division rival intensifies the competition within the American League East.

Meanwhile, the Red Sox are considered a likely destination for free-agent infielder Alex Bregman. Reports suggest that Boston is among the favorites to sign the former Houston Astros star, who is expected to command a contract exceeding $150 million. Bregman’s addition could significantly enhance the Red Sox’s infield and offensive capabilities as they aim to return to playoff contention.
