James Mitchell, a 25-year-old tight end, has been signed by the Carolina Panthers to a reserve/future contract. This type of contract allows teams to claim the rights to players for the upcoming season, even if the official league year hasn’t begun. Mitchell, originally a fifth-round pick by the Detroit Lions in the 2022 NFL Draft, has accumulated 13 receptions for 141 yards and one touchdown over 30 games in his professional career.
Prior to joining the Panthers, Mitchell was waived by the Lions on August 27, 2024, as part of their roster reductions to meet the 53-man limit. Following his release, he spent time on the Lions’ practice squad. His signing with the Panthers provides him an opportunity to compete for a spot on their active roster for the upcoming season.
Reserve/future contracts are typically one-year deals that commence at the start of the new league year in March. While the exact terms of Mitchell’s contract with the Panthers haven’t been publicly disclosed, these contracts generally offer players a chance to participate in offseason workouts and training camps, aiming to secure a position on the team’s roster for the forthcoming season.
