The San Francisco Giants have signed left-handed pitcher Joey Lucchesi to a minor league contract, which includes an invitation to major league spring training and a potential $1.5 million salary if he makes the MLB roster. Lucchesi, 31, began his career with the San Diego Padres before being traded to the New York Mets in January 2021. During his tenure with the Mets, he underwent Tommy John surgery in 2021, causing him to miss the entire 2022 season.

In the 2023 season, Lucchesi made a notable return, starting nine games and posting a 2.89 ERA over 46.2 innings. However, his performance in 2024 was less impactful, with only two major league starts before being designated for assignment and subsequently outrighted to Triple-A Syracuse in July. He elected free agency at the end of the season.

The Giants’ decision to sign Lucchesi reflects their strategy of bolstering pitching depth with experienced players. Given his previous success, particularly in 2023, Lucchesi could be a valuable addition to San Francisco’s rotation if he regains his form during spring training. This move aligns with the Giants’ approach of enhancing their roster through low-risk, high-reward signings.
