The Boston Red Sox are currently deliberating over the potential signing of free-agent infielder Alex Bregman. Manager Alex Cora, who previously coached Bregman during his tenure with the Houston Astros, is a strong advocate for bringing him to Boston. However, Chief Baseball Officer Craig Breslow and other members of the front office have expressed reservations, particularly concerning Bregman’s recent decline in on-base plus slugging (OPS) over the past two seasons.
Bregman, a two-time All-Star and Gold Glove winner, is reportedly seeking a contract in the vicinity of six years and $200 million. The Red Sox are adopting a cautious approach, possibly waiting to see how the market develops before making a commitment. They are aware of interest from other teams, including the Detroit Tigers and the Toronto Blue Jays, but appear willing to negotiate patiently.
Additionally, there is speculation that the Red Sox might be conserving resources for future opportunities, such as a potential pursuit of Vladimir Guerrero Jr. if he becomes available. This strategic consideration could be influencing their current stance on Bregman, as they weigh immediate roster enhancements against long-term planning.
