Red-hot Saka could match Wright’s 29-year record
Bukayo Saka may be on track to tie a club record that has lasted for almost thirty years after having a scorching start to the season.
Having either scored or assisted a goal in seven of his eight Premier League games thus far, our forward has been incredibly productive.
His season began with an incredible goal against Nottingham Forest. He went on to score against Fulham, Tottenham Hotspur, and Bournemouth to bring his total to four goals. He continued to be a major goal source for Mikel Arteta’s team last weekend, dishing out assists against Chelsea, Everton, and Manchester United.
Indeed, the lone occasion in which he hasn’t been involved in a goal was against Crystal Palace in matchweek 2, when he kindly allowed Martin Odegaard to take the penalty kick.
This means that in his previous six league games, he has either scored or assisted. If Bukayo makes a another contribution against Sheffield United on Saturday, he will become our first player to have a goal involvement in seven straight league games since Alexis Sanchez did so in April 2016
The last time an Englishman accomplished it in our colors, though, was in 1994, when Bukayo’s pal Ian Wright relished one of his numerous purple patches.
Wrighty’s scoring run started in September of that year when he scored against Newcastle United. In the following games for George Graham’s team, he would score against West Ham United, Crystal Palace, Wimbledon, Chelsea, Coventry City, and Leicester City.
Having scored on his last home appearance against Sheffield United in October 2020, Bukayo will be hoping that he can repeat the feat to move alongside one of our greatest-ever strikers, and almost certainly prompt a swift exchange of good-natured messages between the pair!
