Former Packers Draft Pick Joins San Francisco 49ers in Key Roster Move…

The San Francisco 49ers have reportedly signed Jonathan Garvin, a former Green Bay Packers draft pick, on Thursday. Garvin, who recently won a UFL championship with the Birmingham Stallions this spring, was originally drafted by the Packers in 2020 out of the University of Miami. Over three years with Green Bay, he played in 38 games, including one start, and logged 673 defensive snaps. After being cut by the Packers in July 2023, Garvin sought a return to the NFL, eventually signing with the Stallions in March.

During his time in the UFL, Garvin recorded 3.5 sacks in the regular season and added two more in the postseason, leading the league in that category. The 49ers, in need of a pass-rusher after placing former second-round pick Drake Jackson on injured reserve, saw potential in Garvin and brought him on board.

Now 25 years old, Garvin will be competing for playing time on a roster stacked with talent, including Nick Bosa, Leonard Floyd, 2023 draft pick Robert Beal Jr., and Yetur Gross-Matos. His challenge will be carving out a role for himself among these established players.

As Garvin joins the 49ers, Packers fans may have mixed feelings. While they wish him well, there’s some hope that he won’t be the one to end Green Bay’s postseason run, given San Francisco’s recent dominance over the Packers in their last five playoff encounters.
