SIGN IN :McCaffrey’s contract extension with iowa Brandon Aiyuk, Deebo Samuel…

The recent McCaffrey deal may not have much impact on Brandon Aiyuk’s contract extension discussions. It’s unlikely we’ll see a quick resolution, especially considering the exorbitant inflation in the wide receiver market. Amon-Ra St. Brown’s contract (four years, $120 million) and Justin Jefferson’s deal (four years, $140 million) have set high benchmarks, making negotiations between Aiyuk and the Niners likely to stretch well into the summer, possibly even the fall. However, it’s expected that an agreement will eventually be reached.

In a league governed by a hard salary cap, and particularly for a team facing the necessity of allocating approximately $50 million, roughly 20% of the cap, towards its quarterback post the 2025 season, there’s a finite capacity for top-of-the-market contracts.

The team can only allocate resources to a limited number of top-tier offensive weapons. With Fred Warner, George Kittle, Nick Bosa, and Trent Williams already commanding salaries at or near the top of their positions, Brandon Aiyuk will soon join them, likely earning over $30 million per season.

McCaffrey’s recent deal has once again set the standard for running back contracts, and it’s probable that he will remain at the top until at least his age-30 season in 2026. Additionally, Purdy could potentially sign one of the most lucrative contracts in NFL history next year. When you add it all up, the financial commitments become substantial.

As the NFL’s salary cap continues to rise, it’s not increasing at a pace that can keep up with the escalating costs of top contracts. Consequently, tough decisions will have to be made, and roster cuts are inevitable.
