Vladimir Guerrero Jr., the Toronto Blue Jays’ star first baseman, has been at the center of recent MLB discussions due to his contract situation and potential future team affiliations. As of January 2025, Guerrero Jr. agreed to a one-year, $28.5 million contract with the Blue Jays to avoid arbitration, marking the third-largest deal for an arbitration-eligible player, following Juan Soto’s $31 million and Shohei Ohtani’s $30 million agreements.
Despite this substantial contract, Guerrero Jr. and the Blue Jays have not reached a long-term extension. The two parties had set a deadline of February 18, 2025, to finalize an extension, but negotiations did not result in an agreement. Guerrero Jr. commented on the situation, stating, “They had their numbers, I had my numbers,” indicating a disparity in valuation.
This unresolved contract situation has led to speculation about Guerrero Jr.’s future with the Blue Jays. Notably, former New York Mets General Manager Steve Phillips suggested that the New York Yankees might pursue Guerrero Jr. if he enters free agency. Phillips highlighted the potential impact of Guerrero Jr. joining forces with Aaron Judge, envisioning a formidable lineup for the Yankees.
Adding to the intrigue, Guerrero Jr.’s stance on playing for the Yankees appears to have evolved. In 2022, he firmly stated he would never sign with the Yankees, even “not even [when I’m] dead.” However, recent comments suggest a shift, with Guerrero Jr. acknowledging that his previous remarks are “in the past,” and he is now open to considering all teams in free agency.
Further fueling rumors, Guerrero Jr. recently liked an edited image on Instagram depicting him in a Yankees uniform. This social media activity has led fans and analysts to speculate about his interest in joining the Yankees.
As the 2025 MLB season progresses, Guerrero Jr.’s performance and contract negotiations will be closely monitored. His potential move to a high-profile team like the Yankees could significantly impact the league’s competitive landscape. For now, Guerrero Jr. remains a pivotal player for the Blue Jays, with his future beyond this season remaining uncertain.
