As the Boston Red Sox’s 2025 MLB season nears, a big storyline remains about what will happen with the team’s top three prospects: Roman Anthony, Kristian Campbell, and Marcelo Mayer.
Boston has not made the playoffs since 2021, but expectations are high this season after the team made many notable offseason acquisitions.
Manager Alex Cora was asked over the weekend if it’s fair to say any of the top prospects will not make the team unless they have a regular role, per MLB.com’s Ian BroCora went on to explain how maturity is a big part of knowing each of their roles, but he did point out a lefty-lefty matchup that Anthony had as one of the more impressive things he’s seen of him.
Anthony is the second-ranked prospect in baseball and the highest-ranked position player. He is undoubtedly MLB-ready; it will come down to the timeline Boston wants to utilize himCampbell and Mayer were long shots to break camp and make the Opening Day roster. Campbell has been struggling in spring training, which may indicate that he needs a full season in the minors before being ready. Mayer has done very well with his opportunities, but the organization still believes he is a year away.
Neither of the “Big 3” prospects will likely make the Opening Day roster. Still, Anthony gets called up relatively quickly and potentially sees at-bats against right-handed pitching for most of the season. Campbell spends most of the year in the minors and gets called up in late August/early September. wne.
