After an illustrious career spanning over two decades, Florida State University’s longtime women’s basketball head coach, Sue Semrau, has officially announced her retirement. Her departure marks the end of an era for the Seminoles, as she leaves behind an extraordinary legacy defined by leadership, mentorship, and unprecedented success.

Semrau took over the FSU women’s basketball program in 1997 and spent 25 seasons building it into a nationally respected powerhouse. Under her guidance, the Seminoles consistently competed at the highest level, earning numerous NCAA Tournament appearances and multiple deep runs, including Elite Eight finishes. Her ability to develop talent, foster a strong team culture, and emphasize both athletic and academic excellence made her one of the most influential coaches in program history.

Beyond her on-court accomplishments, Semrau was known for her deep personal investment in her players. She prioritized their growth not just as athletes but as individuals, emphasizing leadership, resilience, and character development. Her impact extended far beyond the basketball court, shaping the lives of countless young women who played under her direction.

Semrau briefly stepped away from coaching during the 2020-21 season to support her mother, showcasing the same dedication to family that she instilled in her teams. Upon her return, she continued to guide the program with passion and integrity, making her decision to retire bittersweet for both her players and FSU’s basketball community.

As she steps away from coaching, Sue Semrau’s legacy at Florida State is firmly cemented. Her influence on the program and the sport will be felt for generations, and she departs with the admiration and gratitude of the entire Seminole family.
