Kaizer Chiefs have announced that their key defender, Rushwin Dortley, is set to undergo knee surgery, casting uncertainty over his participation in the upcoming 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON). This development is a significant setback for both the club and the South African national team, as Dortley has been instrumental in defense since his acquisition.
Dortley joined Kaizer Chiefs in August 2024 from Cape Town Spurs, following the latter’s relegation. His move was seen as a testament to his hard work and dedication, with the 22-year-old expressing that it “really, really means a lot to me” and showcases that his “hard work is paying off”. His versatility and defensive prowess quickly earned him a regular spot in the Chiefs’ lineup, making him one of the first names on the team sheet .
However, recent reports indicate that Dortley experienced discomfort leading up to a match against Magesi FC, resulting in his absence from the game. Head coach Nasreddine Nabi commented on the situation, stating, “About Dortley, it’s just a discomfort. We didn’t want to take a risk, and he will be back for the next game” . Despite this optimistic outlook, further assessments revealed the need for surgical intervention to address his knee issue adequately.
As Dortley prepares for surgery, the football community rallies in support, hoping for a successful procedure and a swift recovery. His potential absence from AFCON would be a significant loss, but his health and long-term career prospects take precedence. Both Kaizer Chiefs and Bafana Bafana will need to adapt to this development, underscoring the unpredictable nature of sports and the resilience required to navigate such challenges.
