Boston Red Sox manager Alex Cora addressed concerns regarding Rafael Devers’ position following the recent signing of Alex Bregman. Devers, who has been the team’s primary third baseman, expressed his desire to remain at the position, citing assurances made during his contract extension negotiations. Cora acknowledged Devers’ sentiments, stating, “I knew he was going to say that,” and emphasized that roster decisions would prioritize the team’s overall benefit.
The addition of Bregman, a two-time All-Star and Gold Glove third baseman, has led to speculation about potential infield adjustments. Options include moving Bregman to second base or considering other configurations to accommodate both players’ strengths. Cora mentioned that Bregman would practice at multiple infield positions during spring training to determine the best fit.
Devers, who signed a 10-year, $313.5 million contract extension in January 2023, highlighted that his agreement included a commitment to remain at third base. He expressed surprise at the current discussions about a potential position change, stating, “It was definitely a surprise. I’m somebody that believes in people’s word.” Cora reiterated that while individual preferences are considered, the primary goal is to field the most competitive team possible.
