The Boston Red Sox’s recent acquisition of Alex Bregman has sparked discussions regarding the team’s defensive lineup, particularly concerning the third base position. Bregman, who signed a three-year, $120 million contract, is a renowned third baseman with a strong defensive record, including a Gold Glove award last season. However, the Red Sox already have Rafael Devers, a three-time All-Star, firmly established at third base. Devers has expressed his determination to remain in his current position, stating, “Third base is my position,” and has shown reluctance to move to designated hitter or another spot on the field.
Manager Alex Cora has acknowledged Devers’ commitment to third base but emphasizes that team decisions will prioritize overall benefit. Cora noted, “[Devers] has a lot of pride… It’s about the Red Sox. Whatever decision we make is for the benefit of the team.” Bregman, on the other hand, has not insisted on retaining the third base position and appears open to transitioning to second base if it serves the team’s needs. This flexibility could lead to Bregman starting at second base in the upcoming season, allowing Devers to remain at third.
The situation has also drawn input from other team members. First baseman Triston Casas has voiced support for Devers staying at third base, suggesting that Bregman should consider switching positions. This internal dialogue highlights the complexities of roster management and the importance of balancing individual preferences with team dynamics. As the Red Sox approach the season, the coaching staff will need to make strategic decisions to optimize both defensive alignment and offensive production, ensuring that the integration of Bregman enhances the team’s overall performance.
