Red Sox rumors: Update on Nolan Arenado after Alex Bregman deal……. Check out deal in details

The Boston Red Sox have made a significant move by signing free-agent third baseman Alex Bregman to a three-year, $120 million contract, reuniting him with former bench coach and current Red Sox manager Alex Cora. The deal includes opt-out clauses after the first and second years, providing Bregman with flexibility to explore free agency again in the near future.

This acquisition addresses the Red Sox’s need at third base, a position that had been a focal point of speculation during the offseason. Prior to signing Bregman, the Red Sox were rumored to be interested in trading for St. Louis Cardinals’ star third baseman Nolan Arenado. Arenado, who has a full no-trade clause, had reportedly provided a list of five teams he would consider for a trade, including the Red Sox.

However, with Bregman’s signing, the likelihood of the Red Sox pursuing Arenado has diminished. Arenado remains with the Cardinals as spring training begins, despite the team’s efforts to trade him during the offseason. The Cardinals had attempted to negotiate a trade with the Houston Astros, but Arenado exercised his no-trade clause to veto the move. As a result, he is expected to report to the Cardinals’ spring training camp in Jupiter, Florida.

The Cardinals now face a potentially awkward situation, as they have been actively seeking to trade Arenado but have yet to find a suitable deal. President of Baseball Operations John Mozeliak acknowledged the complexities involved, stating that negotiations have not progressed as anticipated. The limited pool of potential trade partners, combined with Arenado’s preferences, has further complicated the situation.

For the Red Sox, the addition of Bregman bolsters their infield and provides a proven offensive contributor. Bregman, 30, concluded his tenure with the Houston Astros after declining a one-year, $21.05 million qualifying offer. In the 2024 season, he batted .260 with 26 home runs and 75 RBIs over 145 games. Defensively, he earned his first American League Gold Glove Award at third base, leading AL third basemen in games played, assists, putouts, double plays turned, and fielding percentage.

While the pursuit of Arenado appears to be on hold, the Red Sox’s farm system remains a strength. Baseball America recently ranked it as the top farm system in baseball for the first time in history, highlighting prospects such as Roman Anthony, Kristian Campbell, and Marcelo Mayer. This depth provides the Red Sox with flexibility for future roster decisions, whether through player development or potential trades.

In summary, the Red Sox’s signing of Alex Bregman addresses their immediate need at third base and likely concludes their pursuit of Nolan Arenado. The Cardinals, meanwhile, continue to navigate the complexities of Arenado’s contract and trade preferences as they prepare for the upcoming season.
