New York Mets manager Carlos Mendoza recently shared several key updates as the team prepares for the upcoming season. One significant development is the decision to have Brett Baty, who was last year’s starting third baseman, work extensively at second base during spring training. With Mark Vientos taking over third base duties, the Mets are exploring Baty’s versatility. He had previously split time between second and third base at Triple-A Syracuse. Mendoza expressed interest in evaluating Baty’s performance at second base and mentioned the possibility of him playing in the outfield during non-Grapefruit League games. Additionally, Luisangel Acuña will receive looks at third base, and Nick Madrigal will play shortstop on occasion. These position experiments aim to enhance the team’s flexibility and depth.
Mendoza also addressed the return of first baseman Pete Alonso, who re-signed with the Mets on a two-year, $54 million deal. He emphasized Alonso’s importance to the team, stating, “It’s huge. As a manager, having the feel and knowing who’s going to be in the middle of your lineup, not worry about who is playing first base, things like that, it means a lot.” Alonso’s consistent presence and leadership are expected to be pivotal for the Mets’ success in the upcoming season.
Looking ahead, Mendoza is focused on building upon last year’s performance, where the Mets reached the National League Championship Series. He stated, “We don’t care about 2024 anymore. Did we have a good season? Yes. But did we achieve what we wanted to achieve? No. That is bringing a championship to Queens.” This mindset reflects Mendoza’s commitment to continuous improvement and his determination to lead the Mets to a World Series title.
