The Toronto Blue Jays have signed three-time Cy Young Award winner Max Scherzer to a one-year, $15.5 million contract. Scherzer, 40, is coming off a challenging 2024 season with the Texas Rangers, where injuries limited him to nine starts, resulting in a 2-4 record and a 3.95 ERA. Despite these setbacks, the Blue Jays are optimistic that Scherzer’s experience and skill will bolster their pitching rotation.
Throughout his 17-year MLB career, Scherzer has established himself as one of the game’s premier pitchers, boasting a 216-112 record and a 3.16 ERA. He ranks second among active pitchers with 3,407 strikeouts, trailing only former teammate Justin Verlander. Scherzer’s accolades include eight All-Star selections, three Cy Young Awards, and two World Series championships with the Washington Nationals in 2019 and the Rangers in 2023.
In joining the Blue Jays, Scherzer enhances a rotation that features Kevin Gausman, JosΓ© BerrΓos, and Chris Bassitt. The Blue Jays, who finished last in their division with a 74-88 record in 2024, have been active this offseason, also signing outfielder Anthony Santander to a five-year, $90 million contract. These moves signal the team’s commitment to strengthening their roster and improving their standing in the upcoming season.
