The Boston Red Sox’s interest in acquiring St. Louis Cardinals third baseman Nolan Arenado appears to have gained renewed traction, according to Jon Morosi of LB Network. On Tuesday, Morosi revealed that the two teams have re-engaged in trade discussions, marking a significant development in ongoing negotiations. He noted that any deal involving Arenado could impact the market for Houston Astros third baseman Alex Bregman, who remains a top target for several teams, including the Red Sox.
One potential advantage for the Cardinals in these talks is the involvement of Chaim Bloom, a key executive with extensive knowledge of Boston’s farm system and young talent. Bloom’s familiarity with Boston’s top prospects could be a factor in shaping the terms of a possible trade.
While discussions surrounding Arenado continue, the Red Sox remain connected to Bregman, who has drawn interest from other clubs like the Toronto Blue Jays, Chicago Cubs, and his current team, the Houston Astros. Reports suggest that Boston’s offer to Bregman is for no more than four years, whereas Bregman is reportedly seeking a six-year deal.
Additionally, Boston’s willingness to make big moves was highlighted during the winter meetings when the team nearly traded first baseman Triston Casas and designated hitter Masataka Yoshida to the Seattle Mariners. However, the deal fell apart due to the Mariners’ concerns over Yoshida’s $56 million contract, which runs through 2027.
Casas, despite showing potential, has had an inconsistent stint with the Red Sox. After a promising rookie season, he missed a significant portion of 2024 due to injury and previously declined a long-term contract offer from the club. His future with Boston remains uncertain as trade talks intensify.
