Left-handed reliever Tim Mayza, formerly of the Toronto Blue Jays, has agreed to a one-year, $1.15 million contract with the Pittsburgh Pirates. Mayza, who had spent his entire Major League Baseball career with the Blue Jays since making his debut in 2017, brings a wealth of experience to the Pirates’ bullpen. Known for his strong sinker-slider combination, he was a key piece in Torontoβs relief corps, making 69 appearances in the 2023 season with a 1-1 record and a 2.59 ERA.
For the Pirates, signing Mayza adds a reliable and durable left-handed option to their bullpen, which has been an area of focus for improvement. The team has been making moves to bolster its pitching staff as it looks to become more competitive in the National League Central. Mayzaβs ability to induce ground balls and handle high-leverage situations makes him a valuable addition, especially in late-inning matchups against left-handed hitters.
Mayzaβs tenure with the Blue Jays saw him overcome adversity, including Tommy John surgery in 2019, before returning to become one of the teamβs most dependable relievers. His transition to Pittsburgh marks a new chapter in his career, giving him the opportunity to contribute to a developing Pirates squad. With his experience and consistency, he is expected to play an important role in stabilizing the teamβs bullpen as they aim for a stronger 2025 season.
