The New York Mets are reportedly exploring the acquisition of Tampa Bay Rays’ first baseman Yandy Díaz, with a potential offer in the vicinity of $30 million. This interest arises amidst the Mets’ ongoing contract discussions with their current first baseman, Pete Alonso, who recently turned 30. The Mets’ president of baseball operations, David Stearns, has shown a preference for signing younger players to long-term deals, leading to a notable gap between the team’s offer and Alonso’s contract expectations. Consequently, the Mets are considering alternative options to bolster their offensive lineup.

Yandy Díaz, 32, has been a consistent performer for the Rays. In the 2023 season, he led the American League with a .330 batting average and achieved career highs with 22 home runs and a .932 OPS, earning him his first Silver Slugger award. His disciplined approach at the plate and ability to get on base make him an attractive target for teams seeking offensive reinforcement.

Financially, Díaz is under a team-friendly contract with the Rays. In January 2023, he signed a three-year, $24 million extension, which includes a $12 million club option for the 2026 season. This contract structure makes him a cost-effective option for the Mets, especially if they decide to move on from Alonso. However, it’s unclear if the Rays are willing to part with Díaz, given his recent performance and value to the team.
