One valid complaint about the New York Mets’ offseason that many fans likely share is their lack of significant spending or blockbuster moves, despite expectations that Steve Cohen’s deep pockets would lead to aggressive roster improvements. After missing the playoffs in 2024, fans hoped for major signings to bolster the rotation, lineup, and bullpen. However, instead of making high-profile acquisitions, the Mets focused on short-term, lower-cost deals, signaling a more restrained approach. While this could be part of a long-term strategy under David Stearns, it has left many fans frustrated with the team’s unwillingness to flex its financial muscle.
Another issue is the uncertainty surrounding the starting rotation, which remains a glaring weakness. The Mets needed to add a frontline starter to complement Kodai Senga, especially after failing to replace Max Scherzer and Justin Verlander properly. While they did sign some depth pieces, they lack a true ace beyond Senga, and his health concerns make the situation even riskier. Fans expected at least one top-tier arm, such as Yoshinobu Yamamoto or Jordan Montgomery, yet the front office largely stayed on the sidelines as rivals improved. This conservative approach could prove costly in a competitive National League.
Lastly, the Mets’ reluctance to add a big bat has raised concerns about the lineup’s ability to compete with the best in the NL East. While Pete Alonso remains a force, the team didn’t make a splashy addition to support him, instead banking on internal improvements from players like Francisco Lindor, Brandon Nimmo, and Brett Baty. Given their struggles last season, relying on bounce-backs rather than securing a proven star feels like a gamble. Fans wanted the Mets to show urgency in building a World Series-caliber roster, but their offseason moves suggest a wait-and-see approach that may not sit well with a passionate fanbase.
