Arsenal has decided to retain Kieran Tierney until the end of the season, despite a prior agreement for him to rejoin Celtic in the summer. Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers had expressed hope of bringing Tierney back to Glasgow during the January transfer window, especially after the departure of left-back Álex Valle. However, Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has opted to keep Tierney for the remainder of their domestic campaign as they aim for the Premier League title.
Tierney, who began his career with Celtic, was sold to Arsenal in 2019 for £25 million. His return to Celtic has been a topic of discussion, and a deal has been finalized for him to rejoin the club on a free transfer in the summer. Rodgers had hoped to expedite this move to address immediate squad needs, but acknowledges that the final decision rests with Arsenal.
The decision to retain Tierney may be influenced by Arsenal’s current squad dynamics and injury concerns. Tierney has recently seen more playing time, featuring in four of the last five matches, following a loan spell at Real Sociedad and recovery from an injury during the 2024 Euros. His experience and defensive capabilities are valuable assets as Arsenal competes for the Premier League title.
