METS NEWSMets reportedly considering former 30-HR hitter,Ryan mountcastle to replace Pete Alonso……..

The New York Mets are reportedly considering Baltimore Orioles first baseman Ryan Mountcastle as a potential replacement for Pete Alonso, whose future with the team remains uncertain due to contract negotiations. Alonso, a four-time All-Star, is seeking a contract exceeding $30 million annually, a figure the Mets are hesitant to meet. Consequently, the team is exploring alternative options to fill the potential void at first base.

Ryan Mountcastle, 27, has demonstrated consistent offensive production since his MLB debut. Over five seasons, he has maintained a 114 OPS+ and averages 26 home runs per 162 games. Notably, in 2021, he hit 33 home runs, showcasing his power-hitting capabilities. His performance has been particularly impressive considering the challenging dimensions of Camden Yards, which have likely suppressed his home run totals. A move to Citi Field could potentially enhance his offensive output.

Financially, Mountcastle presents a more cost-effective option for the Mets. He is under team control for two more years, with a projected market value of $75 million over five years, averaging $15 million annually—significantly less than Alonso’s demands. A hypothetical trade proposal suggests the Mets could acquire Mountcastle in exchange for right-handed pitcher José Buttó and pitching prospect Dom Hamel. This move would address the Mets’ need for a reliable first baseman while providing the Orioles with pitching depth.
