In a surprising turn of events, free-agent first baseman Pete Alonso has reportedly declined a substantial four-year, $95.7 million offer from the New York Yankees. Alonso, who became a free agent after the 2024 season, has been a pivotal figure in Major League Baseball since his debut with the New York Mets in 2019. His decision to reject the Yankees’ proposal underscores his desire to explore other opportunities, with a particular focus on reuniting with the Mets.

Alonso’s tenure with the Mets was marked by significant achievements, including setting the rookie record for most home runs in a season with 53 in 2019 and consistently ranking among the league’s top power hitters. Despite his free-agent status, Alonso has expressed a strong preference to return to Queens. However, contract negotiations with Mets owner Steve Cohen have been challenging. Cohen described the discussions as “exhausting,” expressing dissatisfaction with the proposed contract structures and indicating that the team is prepared to move forward without Alonso if an agreement cannot be reached.

In anticipation of Alonso’s potential departure, the Mets have taken proactive steps by instructing prospects Mark Vientos and Brett Baty to train at first base, signaling preparations for a future without their star slugger. While Alonso’s rejection of the Yankees’ offer leaves his future uncertain, it highlights his commitment to securing a contract that aligns with his expectations and his hope for a possible return to the Mets.
