The Boston Red Sox are reportedly considering a significant move to acquire free-agent infielder Alex Bregman, with discussions of a potential contract in the range of $119 million. Bregman, a two-time All-Star and Gold Glove winner, has spent his entire nine-year career with the Houston Astros, contributing to two World Series championships. In the 2024 season, he posted a .260 batting average with 26 home runs and 75 RBIs over 145 games.
Bregman’s offensive profile aligns well with Fenway Park’s dimensions, particularly his tendency to pull the ball, which could exploit the Green Monster in left field. Notably, in 21 career games at Fenway, Bregman has achieved a .375 batting average and a 1.240 OPS, including seven home runs. His addition would also provide a right-handed power presence to balance Boston’s predominantly left-handed lineup.
However, internal opinions within the Red Sox organization appear divided. Manager Alex Cora and team president Sam Kennedy are reportedly enthusiastic about signing Bregman, citing his leadership and championship experience. In contrast, chief baseball officer Craig Breslow and others in the baseball operations department have reservations, particularly concerning Bregman’s declining OPS over the past two seasons—from .891 in 2022 to .768 in 2024. Additionally, integrating Bregman into the infield raises questions, as it might necessitate shifting current third baseman Rafael Devers to another position or even trading first baseman Triston Casas to address other roster needs.
