Mets Considering Trade for Former No. 1 Pick to Replace Pete Alonso, Report Says ……..

The New York Mets are reportedly considering a trade for former first overall draft pick Spencer Torkelson of the Detroit Tigers as a potential replacement for free-agent first baseman Pete Alonso. Torkelson, who hit 31 home runs two seasons ago, faced challenges last year, including a stint in Triple-A to refine his swing. A proposed trade could involve swapping Torkelson for Mets’ infielder Brett Baty, offering both players a change of scenery that might benefit their careers.

In addition to Torkelson, the Mets are exploring other options to fill the potential void left by Alonso’s departure. One possibility is acquiring Tampa Bay Rays’ first baseman Yandy Díaz, the 2023 American League batting champion. Díaz, 33, is entering the final year of a $24 million contract with a club option for 2026, making him a viable short-term solution. His consistent on-base skills could complement the Mets’ lineup, especially with the recent addition of Juan Soto.

Another potential target is St. Louis Cardinals’ third baseman Nolan Arenado, an eight-time All-Star and 10-time Gold Glove winner. If the Mets acquire Arenado, they could shift current third baseman Mark Vientos to first base, thereby strengthening their infield defense. Arenado is under contract for the next three years, with $74 million remaining, which could be a manageable commitment for the Mets.
