In the 2023 MLB season, Justin Turner joined the Boston Red Sox on a one-year contract with a player option for 2024. Throughout the season, he showcased his versatility by playing multiple infield positions and serving as the designated hitter. Turner’s consistent performance and leadership made him a fan favorite in Boston.
Following the season, Turner declined his $13.4 million player option, opting to test free agency. Despite this decision, he expressed a strong desire to return to the Red Sox, stating, “I love playing in Boston and I’ve had a great experience here so obviously, it would be fantastic if I was still here.”
However, contract negotiations between Turner and the Red Sox did not progress as he had hoped. Turner revealed that returning to Boston was a “no-brainer” for him, but the discussions “never got off the ground.”
As a result, Turner signed a one-year, $13 million deal with the Toronto Blue Jays in January 2024. His tenure with the Blue Jays was short-lived; by July 2024, he was traded to the Seattle Mariners.
Given the Red Sox’s current need for a right-handed power bat and Turner’s previous success in Boston, a reunion could be beneficial for both parties. Turner’s familiarity with the team and his consistent offensive production make him a valuable asset. If the Red Sox are willing to meet his contract expectations, bringing Turner back could bolster their lineup for the upcoming season.
