New York Mets owner Steve Cohen has addressed the ongoing contract situation with four-time All-Star Pete Alonso, expressing a desire to retain the star slugger. Cohen stated, “We want to keep him. Heโs an important part of our team today and hopefully in the future.” He acknowledged the fans’ strong feelings towards Alonso, adding, “Iโm not tone deaf. I totally understand the fansโ love of Pete.”
Despite mutual interest, negotiations have been complex. Alonso, represented by agent Scott Boras, has been exploring the free agency market. Cohen remains optimistic, noting that the team is “still engaged” with Alonso and expressing hope for a favorable outcome.
The Mets’ approach to roster building has evolved under Cohen’s ownership. Initially known for aggressive spending, the team is now adopting a more measured strategy, focusing on spreading expenditures across multiple players rather than investing heavily in a single star. This shift aims to build a sustainable, championship-contending team, balancing financial flexibility with on-field performance.
