The Carolina Panthers have signed former Detroit Lions fifth-round pick, wide receiver Deven Thompkins, to a futures contract. Thompkins, who spent most of the offseason program with the Panthers, rejoined the team on Monday.
Thompkins’ return comes in the wake of the Panthers trading their leading receiver, Diontae Johnson, to the Baltimore Ravens. The trade, finalized on October 29, 2024, involved Carolina sending Johnson and a 2025 sixth-round pick to Baltimore in exchange for a 2025 fifth-round pick. Johnson had accumulated 30 receptions for 357 yards and three touchdowns with the Panthers before the trade.
With Johnson’s departure, the Panthers are looking to bolster their receiving corps. Thompkins’ familiarity with the team’s system from his previous stint could provide valuable depth as Carolina aims to improve its offensive options for the remainder of the season.
