Sean Newcomb had several options to consider as he searched for his next opportunity in baseball this offseason. The former highly-touted pitching prospect for the Los Angeles Angels and Atlanta Braves revealed that a “handful” of teams expressed interest in him. However, Newcomb’s sights were set on one particular destination—a team close to his roots in Middleboro, Massachusetts.
His aspirations became reality last week when the Boston Red Sox announced they had signed the 6-foot-5, 255-pound left-handed pitcher to a minor league contract with a non-roster invitation to spring training.
“Right away, I felt it was the right time to take a shot at signing with them,” Newcomb shared with NESN.com. “It’s always been a dream of mine. You never lose that little part of you that wants to play for your hometown team. Playing here as a visitor has been cool, but the idea of pitching for the home team is something special. I even encouraged my agent to talk to the Sox.”
At 31, Newcomb showcased his skills earlier this month during a bullpen session at Champion Physical Therapy and Performance in Waltham, Massachusetts, with representatives from the Red Sox in attendance. Now, he has the opportunity to compete for a spot with the team he’s long dreamed of representing.
